PowerPoint doesn't have an “Add a Colorful Border to My Slide” button, but you can still place professional-looking borders around slides in your business presentations. The PowerPoint application comes with clip art images that contain border segments you can use to construct a border. You also have the option to draw a border manually using built-in PowerPoint tools. When you create a border manually, you can define the its color, line style, transparency and other properties that make slide presentations unique and interesting.
Use a Rectangle
1.
Launch PowerPoint and open one of your presentations. Click the 'Insert' tab on the ribbon and click the 'Shapes' button to display shapes you can add to your slide.
2.
Click the 'Rectangle' shape and then click and drag the mouse to create a rectangle that covers the slide.
3.
Right-click the rectangle, select 'Format Shape' and drag the 'Transparency' slider to 100 percent.
4.
Click 'Line Color' and review the options in the Line Color panel. These options include Solid Line, Gradient Line, Color and Transparency. Click 'Solid Line' if you want your border to have a solid line. Otherwise, click 'Gradient Line.' If you choose this option, your border will have a gradient line that changes colors gradually along its length.
5.
Click the 'Color' button and select the line color you want to use for the border’s edge. Click and drag the 'Transparency” slider if you want to vary the line’s transparency.
6.
Click 'Close' to return to your slide. You'll see a border around the slide whose properties match the ones you selected.
Use Clip Art
1.
Open one of your PowerPoint presentations and click 'Insert.' Click 'Clip Art' and type 'border' in the 'Search For' text box.
2.
Click 'Go' to view thumbnail images of border sections. These are not complete borders; they are only small horizontal image segments that you will use to construct the border.
3.
Click an image to place it on the slide. Click and drag the image to the top of the slide so that its left edge aligns with the slide's left edge. This image will become the slide’s top border. It won't be long enough to reach from the slide's left edge to the right so you must make it longer.
4.
Click the handle that appears on the image’s right edge and drag the handle to make the image as wide as your slide.
5.
Right-click the image and select 'Copy.' Right-click the image again and select 'Paste' to paste a copy of the image on the slide. Click and drag this copy to the bottom of the slide. The slide will now contain a top border and a bottom border.
6.
Right-click the image you copied and select 'Paste' to create a third image. Right-click that image and select 'Size and Position' to open the Format Picture window. Type “90” in the 'Rotation' text box and click 'Close.' PowerPoint rotates the image 90 degrees and turns it into a vertical image.
7.
Click and drag the image to the slide's left edge so that it becomes the slide's left border. The image may be too long to fit within the slide. If it is, click the handle at the bottom of the image, hold down your left mouse button and drag the mouse up to make the image shorter. Drag the mouse until the image fits neatly within the slide.
